Only three players in the history of the competition, before the Belgium international, had managed to have five goal contributions in a single game. Messi scored five times in Barcelona's 7-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in 2012. He was followed by Luiz Adriano, who again scored five in Shakhtar Dontesk's 7-0 win against BATE Borisov in 2014. Finally, Haaland also hit five goals in City's 7-0 demolition of RB Leipzig in 2023.
